Call Me Prometheus
The clerk saw the laptop tucked under my arm and rolled his eyes.
“You again, Stewart? You figure it out?”
Laugh it up. We’ll see who’s laughing in an hour.
It would be an hour for him. It would be longer than that for me.
“Is three available?” I asked.
“Dude, it’s 5:30 in the morning, you know it is. Hell, every booth is available.”
I slid my payment card across the counter. I wasn’t going to say anything to him. I’d made that mistake before. I’d lost count of how many times I was sure I’d solved the problem only to be wrong.
“Thanks, Tyler,” I said.
Something in my voice must have triggered him.
“Sorry, I’m always busting your chops, kid. If you figured it out, I’d be thrilled for you. For us. It would be…” he trailed off.
“World changing?” I said.
“Yes. It would change everything. I mean, this technology is great, but it’s a tough nut to crack. We’re dependent on human memory. We can only keep what we remember in there,” he said.
